A meta-analysis on nature-based interventions and children's resilience was published with fifteen studies, 2,500+ kids. (Fan et al., 2025).
Resilience can be developed at any age, but the school-aged period offers a critical window of opportunity due to heightened brain plasticity during this stage of development. Given that mental disorders often onset in late childhood and early adolescence, prioritizing early resilience interventions becomes essential.
Nature-based sessions build children’s resilience (i.e. the ability to bounce back from difficult experiences). According to the authors: “Grounding adventure-based experiential learning in nature increases its effectiveness by providing greater autonomy than indoor spaces. This autonomy allows children to take ownership of their actions, manage challenges, recover from setbacks, and foster personal transformation through positive reflection.” Physical effort coupled with perceived risk in a safe, natural setting supports child development.

Each child and treatment plan is unique! In collaboration with the child’s family, a treatment plan can be developed that allows the child to practice all week!

Every child develops skills at their own rate. However, some kids work far harder than other kids just to get through their day. OT can help identify underlying sensory or emotional challenges.

The ultimate goal is to increase your child’s participation in school and home activities. Whether that be improving handwriting readiness before kindergarten or time management and emotional regulation with middle school students. Please consider booking a 15 min discussion with me to see if OT is a good fit!
